IMPORTANT CABLE WAKEBOARDING NEWS!!

After long discussion it has been decided that the IWSF Cable Wakeboard World Championships planned to take place at the CamSur Watersports Complex in the Philippines from 1 – 6 July 2008 have been cancelled. However, the World Wakeboard Association (WWA) will be hosting the 2008 Wake Park World Championships at the same venue on the same dates. (See details below.) I have had confirmation from the EAME Secretary General that these championships are not held under the auspices of the IWSF and are therefore neither sanctioned nor recognized by that Federation.

The dates for the 2008 IWSF Cable Wakeboard World Championships are yet to be determined but the venue will in all likelihood be held in Kiev, Ukraine and the EAME Championships in Bursa, Turkey.

South Africa will be sending a team of riders to the WWA Championships in the Philippines next year.

I will keep everyone informed regarding the IWSF Championships as and when I receive details from them. You can also check out the SAWSF website www.sawaterski.co.za for regular updates.

Cheers!

Val

To the riding community:

On behalf of Governor Lray Villafuerte of the Camarines Sur Province in the Philippines, here's an update on the Worlds.

The 2008 Wake Park World Championships will be held at CWC in the Philippines from July 2-6, 2008. The event will be run under the leadership of Governor Lray Villafuerte and the CamSur Watersports Complex and in cooperation with the World Wakeboard Association (WWA) and the (AWA) Asian Wakeboard Association. The event is open to ALL riders and will offer prize money, more divisions including 3 for wakeskate and an obstacles only division in addition to medals and trophies. We will also host a winch/rail contest to be designed by master railbuilder Pat Panakos from the world famous Projects Camp in the US. This is projected to be one of the biggest international events to date where the best riders from all over the world will compete for world titles. To find out more about CWC, check out the feature in the recent October issue of WakeBoarding Magazine and visit www.camsurwatersportscomplex.com This will be one premier event you won't want to miss. SA NATIONALS - SUNDAY 18 MARCH 2007

The 2007 SA Cable Wakeboarding National Championships were held in perfect weather conditions at Base 3, Midrand on Sunday 18th March 2007.

Despite the event being postponed for a day due to last-minute emergency cable repairs, 40 local cable wakeboarders and wakeskaters took to the water to vie for top honours in the various divisions.

Disappointingly, riders from further afield made the decision not to travel due to the low water level. However, Base 3’s water proved to be more than adequate to allow SA’s top riders to carry out some of the most awesome cable tricks which kept the large crowd of spectators totally enthralled for the day.

The results and photos here ...

SA BOASTS 16 CABLE WAKEBOARD JUDGES!

The cable wakeboard judging seminar held on Saturday 24 and Sunday 25 February at Base 3, Midrand was a tremendous success, resulting in 12 cable wakeboarders and 4 cable wakeskaters qualifying as judges.

The two day event, run by well-renowned international cable wakeboarders Lior Eliyahu (an IWSF council member and International Level 1 judge from Israel) and Gyuri Kirsch (IWSF Chairman, cable park owner and International Level 1 judge from Hungary) was extremely well-attended by 16 cable riders and 1 mom, Glynnis Nassif! The intense and comprehensive seminar included both theoretical and practical examinations. These are the results:

NATIONAL LEVEL 2

(Qualify to judge novice category)

Wayne Jones 78% - Asher Nassif 76% - Justin Mitri 76%

NATIONAL LEVEL 1

(Qualify to judge at National events in position of National Chief Judge)

Devon Nassif 100% - Damien Laird 98% - Kyle Watson 92%

Kyle Holtzhauzen 92% - Russell Daymond 90% - Bryce Watson 88%

Gemma Shales 88% * - Bryerly Nassif 86% * - Arno Theron 84%

Shaun Huson 80% - Michael Daymond 80%

(* Qualify to judge novice/junior categories)

INTERNATIONAL LEVEL 2

(Qualify to judge at International events)

Owen Morgan 88% - David Smith 88%

SA Cable Wakeboarding is extremely proud of Owen and David, who are also now entitled to run national cable wakeboard judging seminars at our 3 cable parks: Base 3 (Midrand), Blue Rock (Somerset West, Cape) and Warmbaths. Devon Nassif is also to be congratulated on his outstanding result of 100%!

Our thanks go to the IWSF who sponsored the international examiners’ travel costs, the SAWSF for their continued support and, most importantly, to Lior and Gyuri for a really great seminar. We look forward to welcoming you back to sunny SA whenever you want to return!

Congratulations to the SA team of 9 riders who took part in the 2006 Cable Wakeboard World Championships which were held from 26 to 30 July in Feldkirchen, Austria!

153 of the top riders from 20 countries around the world assembled at the jetlake cable in the midst of the recent European heatwave for the awesome event. SA improves each time we participate in the championships, with our riders earning valuable, well-deserved points resulting in SA’s 8th place overall. This is ahead of the host country, Austria, with 18 riders, as well as well-known cable wakeboarding countries such as Australia, Serbia and Croatia.

Arno Theron, SA’s current Open Men champion, was placed 6th in the finals of his division, with David Smith, a previous SA champ, making it into the semis but just missing out on a spot in the finals, ending up in 14th place out of 39 outstanding riders.

Bryce Watson and Mark Abrey rode out of their boots (quite literally!) as impressive falls robbed both of them of a place in the finals by just 1 ½ and 2 points. They finished in 10th and 11th place respectively out of 16 starters. Devon Nassif and Shaun Huson were in a toughly-contested group of Junior Men riders but managed 21st and 22nd place out of the biggest category of 42 riders.

After numerous requests from the WWC for more participation from the ‘fairer sex’, SA was proud to oblige! Bryerly Nassif and Amber Stiff were placed 8th and 9th (out of 9 starters) in the Junior Ladies division, and Gemma Shales finished in 10th (out of 14 starters) in the Open Ladies division.

The next Cable Wakeboard World Championships are to be held in the Philippines in 2008 where we’re looking to improve on our individual and team results.
