Samantha Bloemsma and Jan Johnson - MEDAL WINNERS!!!

Update - 2023 IWWF E&A +35 Championship

11-17 September the best skiers from Europe and Africa came together to compete in the Over 35 Champs, which was held in France. South Africa was represented by three skiers; Jan Johnson, Samantha Bloemsma & Robbie Alexander. Feedback from the skiers is that the site was perfect for skiing.

Jan, skiing in the +65 Women Slalom, led the division after the preliminary round with a score of 3.5 buoys on a 13m rope, just 1 buoy shy of her own tournament record.
In the finals, Marie Blanche Tapiero from France put the pressure on with a score of 3 buoys on a 13m. But Jan not only surpassed that score to take gold, but set a new record with a score of 5 buoys on a 13m rope.

Robbie, the 2022 +45 Men Slalom champion, suffered an early fall on the 12m rope in the preliminary round when his ski clipped buoy 4. Unfortunately, a score of 3.5 buoys on a 12m rope was not enough to make the finals and defend his title.
I guess this just highlights the sudden death and difficulty of the sport. One tiny error and you are done.

Samantha, skiing in +35 Women Division, participates in all three events of tournament skiing, namely; Slalom, Tricks and Jump. Preliminary rounds were a mixed bag, where she missed out on making finals for tricks, was the last finals qualifier in slalom, and placed 2nd in jump, which in itself was an achievement after taking a crash.
A distance of 26.1m in the jump final was enough to secure the silver medal. First out on the water in the slalom finals, Sam put the other skiers under pressure with a superb score of 1.5 buoys on a 12m rope. It was only the last skier, Kelly Atkins (UK), that managed pip Sam to gold with a score of 2 buoys on a 12m rope.
Being a 3-event skier, Sam was also vying for the Overall title, where the points from Slalom, Tricks and Jump are added together. It came down to the wire where Sam missed out on top spot by a mere 18 points out of total of 3000 points.

Jan Johnson: GOLD – Slalom
(+65 Women)

Samantha Bloemsma: SILVER – Slalom
(+35 Women) SILVER – Jump
SILVER – Overall

Congratulations Team SA
