The Gauteng riders made a clean sweep of the 2005 SA Cable Wakeboarding National Championships which were held at the scenic Blue Rock Cable Ski, Somerset West over the Easter week-end. Justin Mitri (13) won the Novice category, Donovan Chellew (33) became the Masters champion, brothers Bryce (14) and Kyle (17) Watson took the Junior Boys and Junior Mens titles respectively, and Bryerly Nassif (15) and David Smith (21) both scored hat-tricks by becoming the Ladies and Mens Champions respectively for the third time in three years! All winners are members of the Base 3 (Leisure Lakes) cable ski in Midrand.
This year's event boasted a record-breaking number of competitors - 52 entries across the seven categories - and all three judges made special mention of the extremely high standard of riding, particularly in the Junior Boys and Junior Men divisions. “We've never had these young guys performing tricks like raleys, blind judges, etc. in junior categories in Nationals before”, said Craig Wright, Chief Judge. “This is really great for the future of this awesome extreme watersport.”
Kieran Taheny, the UK National Champion, in the country on a cable wakeboarding vacation and who also took part in the competition (placing 2 nd to David) was also extremely impressed with the general standard of riding and congratulated all the competitors during the prize-giving ceremony.
David Smith, Kyle Watson and Devon Nassif (18) who placed 3 rd in the Mens division will be representing South Africa in the 2005 Cable Wakeboarding World Championships which will be held in Budapest , Hungary at the beginning of August this year.
