This season we are hoping to start training interested skiers in the competitive aspects of the sport. Disabled waterskiing in the UK, Europe, Australia and the USA is very popular and there are regular competitions and International meets. The competitions are held using the same categories of Tournament - namely tricks, jump and slalom. The skiers are placed into various categories according to their disabilities.
We are somewhat isolated down here in SA but, as our Federation is affiliated to the World Waterski federation, we are kept well informed as to the happenings, events and world rankings of the disabled skiers. Our emphasis at present is to get as many disabled skiers onto the water as possible and to stretch our limits, but also to have fun!! As skiing is a relatively expensive sport, if one takes into consideration the purchase price of a boat and equipment, we are at present looking at trying out the Cable skiing venues so that, with relatively minimal outlay, more people with disabilities may have the opportunities to try out this exhilarating sport. |
